Chocolate crackle cookies look fancier than regular cookies and are just as easy to make. They are slightly crunchy on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside – these bite-sized cookies are a perfect dessert for any chocolate lover.

Ingredients (Serving size 24):

- 1 cup flour

- 1 cup granulated sugar

- 1/2 cup of cocoa powder

- 1 teaspoon baking powder

- 1/2 teaspoon salt

- 4 tablespoons butter, softened

- 2 eggs

- 1 teaspoon vanilla

- 4 tablespoons of confectioners’ sugar

In a medium sized bowl, combine the dry ingredients (flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, salt) and mix together. Add the butter. Beat in eggs one at a time and stir in vanilla. Mix ingredients together until combined.

If necessary, put bowl in refrigerator for 10 minutes to make the dough easier to work with.

Put the 4 tablespoons of confectioners’ sugar in a bowl. Use your hands to roll spoonfuls of dough into balls approximately 1 inch in diameter, then roll the chocolate ball until it is liberally coated with confectioners’ sugar. Place sugar-coated balls 2 inches away from each other on a greased (or parchment-lined) cookie sheet and flatten slightly. Place in preheated over and bake for 8 minutes at 400°F.

Keep a List -

Go grocery shopping once a week. Keep a running list of things you need throughout the week so when your shopping day comes, you can just grab the list and go, instead of wasting time peering into your pantry and refrigerator and trying to remember what you need to replenish. To make it a little more fun, you can use grocery list magnets – simply move them from one side of the refrigerator to another when the product runs out.

Prepare ahead of time -

- Spend a few minutes on a weekend (or whenever you have free time) dicing up vegetables such as onions, mushrooms, and carrots, and then storing them in a tupperware so that you can eliminate the prep time when you want to cook. You can also pre-wash and section vegetables such as broccoli and cauliflower for cooking later.

Buy frozen vegetables -

They can be just as or even more healthy than their fresh counterparts, and frozen vegetables are extremely easy to cook – no chopping necessary – just put a little oil and seasoning in a pan and stir-fry until thoroughly heated.

Make more than you need -

- Cook large portions to freeze. Some meals that freeze well are lasagna, soups, stews, casseroles, and chili. Place single-serve portions inside each tupperware for a quick-prep meal later on.

Crock pot it -

- Use a crock pot. Depending on the size, crock pots can yield multiple servings with leftovers to freeze. You can safely leave a crock pot on for eight hours or so, so you can throw all the ingredients in the pot and let it cook overnight or when you’re away at work without worrying about burning the house down. Use your oven more often -

- Rather than cooking food on a stovetop (which can get messy with grease splatters, pans, and spatulas to clean), you can use your oven to bake food as an alternative. Cooking over a stove requires you to attend to it at all times, whereas if you use the oven, you can put the dish in, set the timer, and go relax in the meantime. Try combining some olive oil, lemon juice, minced garlic, salt, and ground pepper over your vegetables and then placing it in the oven.

Cooking at home doesn’t have to be stressful, time-consuming, and messy. Keep these tips in mind and you can be on track to being an efficient chef in your own kitchen. Start off small by making it a goal to cook just once a week. After you get in the swing of things, aim to cook twice a week and so forth, and eventually it will become a habit.

Macaron Ingredients (serves 16):

- 1 cup finely ground almond meal (available in-store at Trader Joe’s, or online via Amazon)
- 3 egg whites (at room temperature)
- 1/4 cup white sugar
- 1 2/3 cups confectioners’ sugar

1. Line your baking sheets with parchment paper or with a Silpat silicone mat.

2. Beat egg whites in a bowl with an electric beater until foamy, then add the white sugar. Continue beating until egg whites are glossy and peaked. (Tip: You can test this by turning the bowl upside down. If the contents remain intact, you are good to go – but be sure not to overbeat.) If you want to add color, put in a few drops of food coloring in the mixture towards the end of beating. Keep in mind that once baked, the finished product will be lighter than how it appears in the egg white mixture.

3. Sift the confectioners’ sugar and almond meal together in a separate bowl. Add dry ingredients into the egg whites and carefully fold together (approximately 30 folds but it can vary). Take care not to overfold, otherwise you will deflate the mixture and end up with a flat product. To test whether the batter is ready, put a small dollop on a plate. If it settles and becomes rounded at the top after about 20 seconds, your batter is ready. If the dollop is still pointed at the top, fold the batter a few more times and test again.

4. Transfer batter to a pastry bag with a plain round tip (if you don’t have one, a ziplock bag will do – cut a bit off a corner when you are ready to pipe). Pipe the batter onto your lined baking sheets in 1 inch rounds. (Tip: if you want the shells perfectly round, you can trace circles as guides on the back of your parchment paper prior to piping.)

5. Once you’re finished piping, let the macarons sit out at room temperature for 45 minutes to an hour. This will let them develop a “skin” which will form the “feet” when baking. They are done sitting when you can very gently touch the macaron and no batter sticks to your finger.

6. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Bake macarons for about 12 minutes (keep an eye out to ensure the tops do not brown) and let cookies cool completely before filling. (Tip: You can test a cookie at 12 minutes by breaking it in half – if it is hollow on the inside, chances are it is not fully cooked. Let the rest of the batch bake for a couple more minutes.)

Vanilla Buttercream Filling Ingredients:

- 1/3 cup butter (at room temperature)
- 1.5 tsp vanilla extract
- 1.5 cups confectioners’ sugar

In a bowl, beat the butter until soft. Stir in vanilla extract and confectioners’ sugar and beat until light and fluffy. Transfer to a pastry bag and pipe onto a cookie shell. Take a second cookie shell and gently press together.

Feel free to experiment with different colors and flavors of macarons. Alternative easy fillings include jam and Nutella. Enjoy!

Follower: On Twitter, you “follow” a user to see their updates on your twitter home page. This is the easiest way to establish a social relationship on Twitter. If someone follows you, you can follow them back. Remember, connections made through Twitter are not vice versa. For example, even if you decide to follow a person, he or she may not follow you back.

If you’re serious about twitter, you really want to make sure you’re sending out quality tweets.

Tweet: It’s a message you send out to your followers from your Twitter account. Think of as a verb, you tweet a message. In order for a tweet to be delivered, it cannot exceed 140 characters. Due to its 140 character restriction, many people consider Twitter to be a great outlet for micro-blogging.

The main purpose of Twitter is to share things that you think your followers might find useful, interesting or even entertaining.

Retweet: This is a feature used to share someone else’s tweet. By clicking the retweet button, you share someone else’s tweet to your own group of followers.

Some people prefer to retweet manually by typing “RT @USERNAME” before pasting the tweet’s contents. People who retweet this way, generally provide additional context to the retweet. Some people add in their own thoughts. It’s a good way to reach out to your followers.

@Mention: This is a way for you to direct your tweet to another person’s account on Twitter. For example, a tweet that begins with “@username” will only appear on the home pages of followers who also follow that person you’re tweeting. However, if you place the @username at the end of your tweet, it will appear to everyone who’s following you.

DM: Short for Direct Message. It’s essentially a private conversation between two Twitter accounts. Direct Messages can only be sent to someone who’s following you. Direct Messages are also restricted to 140 characters.

People who actively use twitter have a purpose in mind. They tweet so they can reach a certain audience. This is where “engagement” becomes useful. It’s a key concept when trying to establish social media relationships. “Engagement” is a way of responding to other users, by making conversation with people who contact you via Twitter. Whether that’s a tweet or a direct message, it’s in your best interest to reply. Replying to tweets and direct messages allows you to further enhance your relationship with other Twitter users.

Hashtag: People frequently insert “hashtags” into their daily tweets to provide specific context. Hashtags make it easy for people who search for updates on a specific topic. It’s like a blog category; it separates your tweet from other irrelevant ones. To use a hashtag, enter the hash symbol and follow it with a relevant keyword. For example, if you’re tweet was about Apple’s latest iPhone 5, incorporating hashtags such as #Apple #iPhone5 would make sense. In most cases, a tweet should only have one to two hashtags. You can always click your hashtag after sending your tweet. This way, you can see other similar tweets with the same hashtags.

Feed: Once you log in to twitter, you’ll realize the Feed is your home page. It’s like any other live newsfeed, except in twitter, it’s constantly providing you with a list of tweets from people you follow.

Many people like to share links in their tweets. As you know by now, tweets are limited to 140 characters or less. So people use URL shorteners to shorten their links.

URL Shortener: Tinyurl (www.Tinyurl.com) and Bit.ly (www.bit.ly) are popular url shortening services. A url shorterner creates a very short url address and it automatically redirects anyone who clicks on them to the original url address. It’s the perfect way to share an article.

Trending: When a term is very popular on Twitter, it’s listed as “trending.” You’ll notice when you log into twitter, the home page has a list of trending terms, and it even lets you view terms trending in certain geographical locations. For example, national holidays or news events are often trending.

Now that you understand the main functionalities of Twitter, here is a guideline for users who want to maximize their Twitter:

For example, if your tweet is relevant to Monday Night Football, you can add hashtags such as #NFL #MNF. These types of hashtags can help you reach out to people interested in Monday Night Football. The point of hashtags is to reach out to an audience beyond your current group of followers.

If you aren’t a celebrity then don’t expect your Twitter to miraculously grow. Think of it as something you created from scratch. It takes time, it takes care and it takes quality.
